Guatemala Commute, Section 1: Chimaltenango Dept. – PT’s Espresso

It is harvest time in Guatemala, so our our inexperienced espresso purchasing workforce traveled down this week to reconnect with our Direct Business companions across the nation and practice the harvest.

Their first forestall used to be Chimaltenango Division, house to Fernando Diaz’s El Retiro and Los angeles Merced farms. Practice alongside!

El Retiro

“That is Rumoldo, a picker running at El Retiro. The farm supervisor says he has been choosing round 250 kilos of cherries an afternoon. This is just about two times the common!”

“This 12 months’s Cimarrona crop is ready to be picked. Cimarrona is a Bourbon mutation that Anacafe [Guatemala’s National Coffee Association] recognized at El Retiro a number of years in the past. Seeds from those bushes have been accrued and planted in a brand new location at El Retiro this is now thriving. One noticeable distinction is that the cherries are extra compact and feature much less mucilage than Bourbon.”

“Beneficio El Retiro is the rainy mill for the farm the place the espresso cherries are processed and dried. It’s an overly busy time and the patio house is at capability. The raised beds [pictured at top] are a vital addition that aids in constant rotation all the way through the drying procedure.”

Los angeles Merced

“Los angeles Merced is the opposite portion of the circle of relatives farm owned by means of Nando’s prolonged circle of relatives for over 100 years. Across the flip of the century, they bought a lot of the land between the farms to native households within the house. Los angeles Merced is round 200m upper than El Retiro. It is an engaging mixture of 100+ year-old Typica and Bourbon and extra intensively pruned and controlled Pache.”

Keep tuned for extra from the Vides58 circle of relatives of farms and Finca El Socorro in Huehuetenango!
